For many years Susan Moxley has collected old discarded hand spun yarns and woven fabrics on the Greek island of Kythera. She has become fascinated with their patinas, stains, and darned patches which all contribute to a story of the island’s past austerity, when everything was valued.
‘I have made a series of stitched ‘paintings’ with these retrieved fabrics. The textured artworks have a fragility. I use the same methods of stitch and repair, which I found on the fabrics, and I carry the old narratives into the present, imposing my own, but always being aware and respectful of the women who worked them.’
The exhibition will run from 24th February until 26th March 2024.
