Radley College Beagles hosted a Countryside Sports Reception at the Cavalry and Guards Club, SW1, in memory of Mike Linnell, hunt treasurer 1970 to 2023.
Over 120 guests watched and listened to the horn-blowing competition for the Mike Linnell Trophy, first presented in 2003. Past and present masters and huntsmen from any school, university or Forces pack competed with a trumpeter from The King’s Troop, who were dining next door! Stowe, Radley, Eton, Christ Church and the Royal Agricultural University all took part with the winners of the ‘currently serving’ category going to William Stubbs (2016, C) (RAU and formerly RCB) and George Miers (Eton). The ‘retired’ category winners were Ed Fagan (1999, B) (RCB) and Arthur Irvin (Stowe). Ed Fagan won the event in 2003 and having not blown in the field since, showed extraordinary talent.
The event was judged from behind a screen by Harry Gosling MFH (2006, D) and watched by 21 current and former RCB Masters, Huntsmen and Whips. The list of other packs represented by guests was also impressive. RCB Chairman, Atty Beor-Roberts (1971, H) said of the event: ‘It was a hugely enjoyable evening, overrun by the younger generation of sportsmen’.
